Internship Reflections: TF 11.C

Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.

Locate Web 2.0 resources appropriate for elementary.

Throughout the school year I have helped the school work towards the utilization of Web 2.0 sites that benefit elementary aged children. I have a Diigo site strictly for Web 2.0 favorites and have emailed teachers throughout the year when new sites have been discovered. During our once a month after school training sessions I have coordinated many Web 2.0 sessions such as: Facebook for Communication in Education; Primary Innovation (Web 2.0 for kindergarten through second grade), Tweet: Using Twitter in Education, Glogster and Audioboo.

While at the ISTE conference in Philadelphia during the summer of 2011, I attended many Web 2.0 sessions. I found many valuable tools for teachers to utilize with their students.  At our summer Technology Academy held in Highland Park, I presented “The Award for the Best Web Tools Goes To….” Using the Google presentation tool to create my slide show found at http://goo.gl/dxhXX.  I also presented Web 2.0 Tools for Writers during the district Technology Academy using the presentation at http://goo.gl/TRSWj .

Apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.

Help technology team by researching one-to-one laptop initiative and help pilot program.

I began researching different 1-1 laptop devices in August 2010. I met with several vendors to discuss their company’s options. After meeting with Chad Henderson from Dell, I realized that the Dell Netbook 2110 was what our campus needed. I was able to use the netbook for a trial period. I found the netbook to be extremely durable and hard working. I found that all the elementary programs would work on the laptop. The netbooks also had the availability to have a mobile lab with specific slot allocated for 24 laptops.

After getting the logistics of which laptop and the receiving quotes from Dell, I was able to meet with the principal and PTA gift committee concerning the decision to pilot a two netbook carts for third grade and two carts for fourth grade. The pilot would be from February 2011 till the end of May 2011. In the fall of 2011, we will purchase two more netbook carts for each third and fourth grade teams. In the Spring of 2012, we plan to purchase the final two carts for the final two classes in each third and fourth grade team.

During the pilot time, I met with the 4 teachers, two from third and two from fourth, to discuss ways to implement the netbooks. I created a group on our district Ning to keep our conversations and also have a list of resources the teachers could easily retrieve.

I implemented a book study on the book called 1-to-1 Learning by Pamela Livingston.

Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhances instructional strategies to support diverse needs of learners.

Plan with grade levels appropriate lessons using technology.

At the end of September, 2010,  the third grade teachers wanted to start a project with their student’s favorite places around our city. I met with the teachers to discuss the possibilities of branching this lesson so that the student could take the idea global. We started with the logistics of students gathering pictures of their favorite spots around University Park, Texas. The students were to create a five or more “slide” narrated VoiceThread about their favorite spots around town which we called hot spots. We contacted our district Global Teacher, Edna Phythian, to help us connect with a class in Madrid. We created a shared Google doc to keep everything organized and in writing. I met again with the teachers in early October to finalize lesson and to create a simple blog where we could link each students VoiceThread for others to easily find and interact. On October 21 I updated our shared Google doc to have links to each teacher’s VoiceThread Hotspot project on the blog. Later the teacher from Madrid shared her link.

Demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.

Go to ISTE in Philadelphia to learn and share innovative technology.

During the summer of 2011, I attended the International Society for Technology in Education conference in Philadelphia. I often appreciate technology conferences. Alan November’s Building Leadership Communities (BLC) in Boston is my favorite but this year I chose to participate in ISTE’s yearly conference. I flew to Philly on Sunday,  June 26 with a fellow Technologist, Leslie Kennemer.  I attended many sessions. The first few days the sessions were not up to our standards but Tuesday and Wednesday were excellent.  I took detailed notes on sessions using a Google doc so I could easily recall information shared and also share with my colleagues. The Doc is located at: http://goo.gl/1zcAj . We returned to Dallas the evening of July 29, 2011.

I enjoyed presenting the Web Tools to the district on July 26 and July 28, 2011. The teachers at the presentation were very appreciative of the information shown. I tried to have sites that would benefit my audience of elementary teachers. I allowed the teachers to have time at the end to get familiar with the sites they found most interesting and valuable for the grade they taught.

Internship Reflections: TF 1.A

Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE NETS*T).
Meet with teams to discuss district and campus plans.

On September 7 and 8, 2010, I met with the grade level teachers during their conference times. I led a discussion about appropriate technology usage for their age groups. I compiled a list of appropriate technologies including Web 2.0 tools on a Google Doc so the teachers and principal could access as necessary: click here

I led the discussion on yearly testing such as MAPs. I also helped the teachers understand the importance of utilizing Edna Phythian, Special Teacher on Assignment for Global Technology. I reiterated that in all the technology planning considered throughout the year, the teachers need to concentrate on the student being the end user of technology.
